What Is Berberine?
Share
Berberine is a naturally occurring compound found in several plants, including barberry, goldenseal, and Oregon grape, and it's one of the most-studied botanical compounds in nutrition research related to glucose metabolism.
Where it comes from
Berberine has a long history of traditional use across multiple cultures, typically extracted from plant roots, stems, and bark.
What research generally studies
Modern nutrition and metabolic research has looked at berberine's relationship to normal glucose metabolism, often comparing its effects to those of common metabolic-support compounds. As with most botanical compounds, study quality and results vary, and findings on an isolated compound don't automatically transfer to a finished multi-ingredient supplement.
How it fits into cravings and blood sugar
Because glucose metabolism and blood sugar swings are closely tied to cravings (see Blood Sugar Spikes and Sugar Cravings), berberine is often included in formulas targeting that broader topic area.
Berberine HCl is one of the primary ingredients in SWEETSCAPE; see Ingredient Research for the complete ingredient list.
